Martinsville Speedway Hot Dogs. The King of NASCAR Concessions?
Hot dogs for breakfast? Well if you happened to be at Martinsville Speedway Sunday morning you may order yours around 730am. That’s the time the concessions will begin selling the favorite food of fans here at this historic track. Opened in 1947, Martinsville Speedway is of course known for its short track racing NASCAR style. It’s also known for its hot dogs.
A friend long ago once advised me to never ask what’s in a hot dog so I won’t do that. All I know that besides the great racing we often see at this .526 mile paperclip shaped track, its famous for it hot dogs. Not just any old hotdog you find at many sporting venues. This dog is special.
The hot dog itself consist of a Valleydale hot dog with chili, onions and slaw. Now get this. For a mere $2 you got yourself a meal. That’s over $4 less than the $6.25 a hot dog would cost you at Citi Field in New York. It might not be so healthy for you but the Martinsville hot dog is a great bargain.
While we’re ready to crown the Martinsville hot dog the “King of NASCAR Food”, there is some serious competition to deal with first.
The Carburetor Crunch brought to you by some genius at Phoenix International Raceway. Cardiologist everywhere, please skip this part. The Crunch is a deep fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich with Cap’n Crunch cereal and caramel on the outside and bacon and bananas on the inside. Are you friggin kidding me?
The Brunch Burger at Charlotte Motor Speedway also provides some stiff competition. The Brunch Burger is a quarter pound cheeseburger topped with hash browns, more cheese, bacon and egg. The “bun” is actually French toast and it comes with maple syrup. I think all the essential food groups are there!
The “Big One” from Talladega Speedway has got to be near the top of everyone’s list. This monster of a meal is a meatball with a center of mozzarella and pepper jack cheeses mixed with smoked BBQ pulled pork and a bit of BBQ sauce. It’s then covered with a mix of parmesan cheese and panko bread crumbs and deep fried until golden brown. Its topped off with more BBQ sauce and a bit of pasta. It weighs over a pound but not sure how many Weight Watchers points it is. Might be best not to ask.
Texas Speedway chimes in with their own superstar entry, the “Shake N Bacon Brew”. Now get this, it consist of six ounces of Rahr & Sons Ugly Pug Black Lager, six ounces of vanilla ice cream, two ounces of bacon-infused maple syrup. These ingredients are mixed in a blender and topped off with whipped cream (of course) and bacon crumbles. The person who dreamt this up is nothing short of a genius.
There is nothing not to love about any of those dishes but for my money the Martinsville Dog takes the cake. Over 50,000 0f these handfuls of pure joy will be consumed this weekend at NASCAR’s oldest facility. Man, I could go for one right now.
